“When I was growing up in Detroit, my aunt used to take us to the barbershop on Gratiot Avenue on the east side of Detroit, and she’d drop us off. She’d never go in; she’d give us the money and drop us off.
And a lot of the time, you’d just go in there and listen to the guys talk. The barbers would be in there, the older gentlemen would be in there telling stories … they heard from one of their clients or something they’d been through. You learn a lot from being in a barbershop. It’s just amazing how barbering is such a cornerstone in a lot of neighborhoods.”
